Facebook is back with another update: Facebook Live. As the popularity of video content increases, Facebook has given B2B marketers the opportunity to provide their audience with a live look of what’s happening at events or even in the office.

People love watching video, which is why we’ve built a dedicated place to watch this engaging content on Facebook. While your current fans will be able to keep up here and in News Feed, the experience will help new followers discover you too. – Facebook

We decided that WordCamp Jacksonville would be an amazing time to try out Facebook Live. Sure, you can keep up with the tracks on WordCamp TV and following #wcjax on Twitter…but we wanted to take that experience one step further. By following the best practices listed below, you can successfully record your own Facebook Live video now too!

Tell people ahead of time when you’re going to broadcast

We started promoting the week before, using our employees as brand ambassadors to help spread the word. From Twitter to Facebook and even LinkedIn, we wanted to make sure everyone could be easily directed right to our Facebook page where all the action would be taking place.

Go live when you have a strong connection

Thankfully, as a WordPress conference, WiFi wasn’t much of an issue. So we were able to stream easily, without any interruptions. It also helped those in attendance watch it without any problems.

Write a compelling description before going live

This should be pretty self-explanatory, since we know that social media updates are indexed by Google, the description you include in your video should be optimized if possible. More importantly, it should immediately tell viewers what to expect.

Ask your viewers to follow you and receive notifications when you go live

This relates a lot back to number 1, as we promoted this live event across all our social media channels with a link back to our Facebook Page. That way, in case someone on LinkedIn was interested in viewing the live stream, they were able to be instantly directed right to where they needed to be.

Say hello to commenters by name and to respond to their comments

Once you get a good audience built up, more users will interact and engage in your content. Those unable to attend the conference your live streaming may have questions that you can answer, making them feel as though they were apart of the event.

Broadcast for longer periods of time to reach more people

As we went through the weekend and started getting the hang of Facebook Live, we were able to play with the lengths of video and determine which ones should be longer or shorter, depending on the content presented.

Be creative and go live often

Don’t say we didn’t warn you: Facebook Live can be a very addicting habit. The more we got used to using it, the more we wanted to go live! And so we did…
