In a recent blog post of mine we saw how the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) started to roll out new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) back in 2013. What this means for marketers is that we are no longer limited to the traditional gTLDs such as .com, .net, and. org. ICANN’s New gTLD Program will result in the expansion of the Domain Name System from 22 gTLDs to possibly 1,400.

When it comes to your main website I wouldn’t necessarily stray too far away from the traditional gTLDs, since consumers trust these domains. However, the real opportunity I see here is for marketing campaigns and landing pages. The beautiful thing about these new domains is they’re different, they stand out, and they are sticky, easy to remember!

We already went over one of the most controversial domains, .sucks, but lets take a look at some of the other new gTLDs. At emagine we work with B2B companies so I went ahead and pulled domains that could be useful in the B2B space:

  • .REVIEW
  • .TECH
  • .TECHNOLOGY
  • .MARKETS
  • .ENERGY
  • .HOSTING
  • .DIGITAL
  • .REVIEWS
  • .EVENTS
  • .SOCIAL
  • .MANAGEMENT
  • .TRAINING
  • .DOWNLOAD
  • .NETWORK
  • .SUPPORT

My personal favorites are .NINJA and .GURU. Just think of the possibilities. What better way to highlight your expertise in SEO than with a domain like “SEO.guru.” or “SEO.ninja.” Okay, okay that’s a lie I probably wouldn’t hire someone with either of those domains (they probably still buy backlinks). However, these domains are ones that could make for a great marketing campaign! But likely have limited use elsewhere. When talking to a colleague about .ninja he said, “leave the .ninja to the actual ninjas.”
